A Few Tips to Help Your Dog Stay Safe and Healthy this Thanksgiving (and Always!)

Most dog owners (okay, probably all dog owners) know the pangs of guilt we feel when those big, sad eyes look at us from under the dinner table. Our best advice: Fight it!

Some of the food we enjoy for holiday such as Thanksgiving is not safe for our four-legged friends. For instance:

Bones

Remember that cooked bones from turkey and duck are hollow and brittle, making them easily breakable into sharp pieces that are dangerous for our dogs! Letting them indulge in a bone is a fabulous idea, especially so they can feel the love and camaraderie of the holiday season, but make sure the bone is one that will not lead to GI tract problems such as diarrhea, vomiting, or in the worst cases, punctures and blockage. For some fabulous recommendations on holiday treats, stop by Colorado Canines!

High Fat Foods & Tryptophan

Similarly, be careful about sharing your table scraps with the owner of those pleading, begging eyes. Foods with high fat content such as those we enjoy for the holidays (gravy, turkey skin, pie, etc) can lead to digestive problems in dogs, sometimes as severe as pancreatitis. While myths abound as to the dangerous nature of the chemical tryptophan (what makes you sleepy Thanksgiving afternoon) and dogs, recent research has affirmed that in reasonable amounts found in lean turkey meat can have a calming effect. This might even be helpful during the hectic holiday season.

Ingestion of Foreign Materials

Food isn’t always the most tempting thing in front of a dog’s nose! Make sure to properly dispose of any tinfoil or plastic used to cook and store your holiday feast. Dogs have an exceptional sense of smell, and if they find and consume plastic or tinfoil with that yummy turkey grease on it, they could experience severe intestinal blockage, which would ruin the holidays for everyone!

For more helpful tips, give us a call or stop by Colorado Canines. We are all experienced in and passionate about pet nutrition, and will be happy to help make this holiday season fun and healthy for all of your furry family members!

Happy Thanksgiving from the entire pack at Colorado Canines!

Halloween Tip: The Scary Truth about Dogs and Chocolate

‘Tis the season to consume inordinate amounts of candy, and humans aren’t the only ones who get excited about gooey treats like chocolate. Unfortunately, we have all heard warnings about the adverse effects of chocolate on our pets. Truthfully, however, your pooch (probably) isn’t going to keel over after stealing an M&M. After that first taste, though, (as we all know) it’s hard to stop, even for our furry friends.
Theobromine, a chemical found in chocolate, is metabolized more slowly in animals such as dogs, and as little as 50g of chocolate can lead to theobromine poisoning. Mild cases of poisoning can cause dehydration, excitability and a slow heart rate, and severe cases can lead to seizures and death.
So keep your pooch’s tail wagging this Halloween by keeping those yummy things is secret, impenetrable places.
(If you feel too terrible when you have to deny those sad puppy eyes, feel free to stop in for some pet-friendly carob treats. They won’t even be able to tell its not really chocolate!)

Hi Friends!

Seventh Annual Halloween Party
Join us for Colorado Canines’ annual Halloween Party on Sunday, October 29, 3-4PM.  Dog costumes encouraged!  Come to show off your pup’s style and stay for free snacks for people & pups.  Seen a dog “bob for biscuits” before?  Join us for doggie games in the store.  Last year’s party was a howl: you can still see pictures of our four-legged trick-or-treaters on our blog

Dogs Go On Vacation Too!
Colorado Canines is branching out into dog-friendly vacation rentals!  Now you have one more option for a home-away-from-home vacation with your best friend.  Our first property is a three-bedroom/two-bath house on the West Shore in Lake Tahoe, California.  Our cabin sleeps 7-9 people and is pet-friendly.  It also has access to a private homeowners’ beach and pier and is close to skiing, hiking, and bike trails.  Learn more about our dog-friendly cabin here.

Brown Dog Jerky
If you’ve been on Pearl Street lately then you know about Brown Dog Jerky.  You’ve either seen Rick preparing bags of his Colorado-raised, grass-fed bison jerky in our kitchen or your dog has dragged you toward the store in search of a fresh batch.  Jib & Gate love this chewy meat treat so much we named it for them.  (That’s right—Jib & Gate are the two chocolate labs you’ve see peeking over the kitchen door!)  Still haven’t tried the meatiest treat to hit the East End?  You can stop in the store for a bag or order one online from our webstore.

The Holidays Are Coming!  The Holidays Are Coming!
That’s right: leaves are turning, the wind is blowing, and we have a great view of snow-topped peaks from the Front Range.  That could only mean one thing around Colorado Canines: NEW STUFF!  Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Hanukkah toys & treats are arriving daily.  Don’t forget your four-legged friends and the people who love them this holiday season.

Raw Diet and Nutrition Class
Colorado Canines welcomes back Kate Solisti on Wednesday, November 15, 7:15-9:15 PM.  Kate will walk us through “The How’s and Why’s of the Raw Diet.”  Participants will learn both the physiological and practical ins-and-outs of feeding your dogs & cats a homemade raw diet.  The course fee is $55.  Space is limited, so please reserve your spot soon by calling or coming by the store.

Hi Friends!
As May slides into June, it’s a great time of year to be a dog (or a dog’s best friend!).  The weather is beautiful, the creeks are flowing, and there’s enough going on around town to keep a dog and his person busy all day.  Check out our suggestions for spending some quality time together:Enjoy Brillig Works Bakery Items in our Café for Dogs (& Their People)
Colorado Canines Café is proud to carry Brillig Works local muffins, scones, and cookies for people.  Freshly baked, all-natural, and a Boulder favorite, you can enjoy breakfast or an afternoon snack with your coffee drink while your dog munches on his in-house entrée or a peanut butter-filled Kong.  Take advantage of our free wireless internet access and spend an afternoon in our café with your canine friend.

Cheer on the Bolder Boulder
It’s already time for our 2nd Annual Colorado Canines Bolder Boulder party—come celebrate the new route down Pearl Street as 50,000 runners, walkers, joggers, and wheelchair racers make their way through town.  We’re located between kilometers 7 & 8—a perfect place to watch your friends, family, and the rest of town make their way to the finish line without having to crowd into Folsom Field.  Our store and café open at 7AM on Monday, May 29 in time to catch the wheelchair racers and first wave of runners.  We close early at 2PM on Memorial Day.

Bolder Boulder Special Offer: Bring in your race bib or other proof of registration on Saturday, Sunday, or Monday of Memorial Day weekend and receive 50% off a dog wash!

Visit the Front Range Rescue Dogs at the Creek Fest
Ever thought about joining Vega & Alex on the Front Range Rescue Dog team?  Want to meet some of the handlers and dogs who help out around Colorado?  Stop by the FRRD tent at the Boulder Creek Fest Memorial Day weekend.  The festival is downtown along Boulder Creek from 9th St. to 14th St.  Leashed dogs are welcome at the Creek Fest.  More information on this year’s Boulder Creek Fest is at www.bouldercreekfestival.com.

Got big summer plans?  We’d love to hear about them.  Be sure to stop in with your pup and say hi!
